How is Portrait Cutout different from Remove Background?▾
Portrait Cutout uses MODNet, a neural network trained specifically for portrait matting. It produces soft alpha values for hair, fur, and semi-transparent edges — rather than a hard binary mask. Remove Background uses u2netp for general-purpose salient object detection, which works on any subject but produces harder edges.
Does it work on non-portrait images?▾
MODNet is trained on portraits (people, upper body, headshots). For pets, products, or general objects, use Remove Background instead — it's optimised for any subject.
What background options are available?▾
Transparent (PNG with alpha channel), white, black, any custom colour via colour picker, or a custom background image you provide.
Does it reduce image quality?▾
No. The output is rendered at original resolution. For transparent exports, PNG is used to preserve the alpha channel losslessly.
How does alpha matting work?▾
Instead of a binary yes/no mask, MODNet predicts a value between 0 and 1 for every pixel — how much of that pixel is foreground. This lets hair strands, soft edges, and semi-transparent areas blend naturally.
