When to use which format
JPG — best for photos. Smaller files, slight quality loss on compression. Use for: emailing photos, uploading to social media, web images where file size matters.
PNG — best for graphics, screenshots, logos, and anything with text or sharp edges. Lossless, so no quality loss, but larger files. Use for: design work, presentations, anything with transparency.
WebP — best of both worlds for web. Smaller than JPG at similar quality, supports transparency like PNG. Use for: websites where performance matters.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting PNG to JPG lose quality? Slightly, yes. JPG is lossy — it compresses by discarding data your eye is unlikely to notice. For photos, the difference is invisible. For text-heavy screenshots or graphics with sharp edges, you may see minor artifacts. Keep the original PNG if you need lossless.
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality? No. Converting to PNG won’t recover quality already lost in JPG compression. It will make the file larger without making it sharper. Only convert to PNG if you need transparency or a lossless format for editing.
Can I convert multiple images at once? Yes. Drop a batch of files in. The desktop app handles folders.
Does fwip support WebP? Yes — convert to or from WebP, alongside JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP, and TIFF.
